The poem was inspired by times when I'd wake before dawn and hear the clear sharp songs of birds rising. It is at this time, when we are not distracted by the static of our routine, that we must confront our truest self.

Text:

Night Birds

                by Emily Calvo

Fleeting shadows in the starlight

glide in dark's stark emptiness

the birds of truth seen at night

have no camouflage for daylight sins.

Synthetic motives leave at five

Ambition goes to sleep at nine

Lonely singing guides my mind

to find new thoughts in quiet time.

Even dreams sent as a puzzle

meant to unfold the muddle

paint a portrait true-to-life

the naked self we see at night.
