Waking Again

             By Emily Calvo

When Grandma leaned in,

I saw her cleavage sprout wings

Lines, like a fork in the road,

cradled her pendant

reached for her shoulders.

Decades later, the morning mirror

reveals creases on my chest,

a tattoo carved by side-sleeping—

brooks that branch north

to reach my shoulders.

Rather than remind me of time

this hieroglyph engraved by sleep

cues “V” for another victory

delivered by sunrise.
